Booking Tips

Here are our general tips for booking a Disney Cruise Line:

  1. Selecting the Right Room or Room Category

  2. Travel Planning

  3. Selecting a Dining Rotation

If you have questions or just need some help, please feel free to reach out to us for free booking assistance!

Selecting the Right Room or Room Category

Selecting the right room for your family is an important first step. We recommend you consider the following four key items:

  • Room category - Select a room category that meets your budget and travel preferences.  There are 4 primary categories:  Inside, Oceanview (with one or two portholes), Verandah (with an ocean balcony), and Concierge. (Note:  Our concierge recommendations are offered in separate blog post.)

  • Room type - Select a room type that meets your family size and budget. Most rooms accommodate 3-4 people.  The deluxe family rooms can accommodate up to 5 and typically offer more space.  If you are traveling with a party larger than 5, you will want to explore connecting staterooms. For more information on the room types, check out the stateroom information under Our Ships on the DCL website:  https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/ships/

  • Room location - We recommend rooms that are mid-ship on the upper to middle floors (not directly above or below the restaurants, theaters, or pools) to avoid ambient noise and minimize motion.  You can also opt for a "guaranteed" room in a specific class - this guarantees a room in that class or higher, but Disney will select the room for you - to save a bit of money if you are willing to try it.  (We have done it on several shorter sailings and never had an issue.)

  • Room nuances - There are some slight variations in room types that you may want to be aware of, as they are often in the "fine print" of the room description:

  • No Split Bath - Split bathrooms (where you have one bathroom with the shower & a sink and one with the toilet & a sink) are standard with the exception of the standard inside staterooms. However, there are a few exceptions in the ocean view category that offer more interior space, but a single bathroom.  (We love the split bath, so we typically avoid these configurations.)

  • Tub Shape - On the Dream and Fantasy, some family category staterooms do not have a standard tub, but a small circular tub.  We generally only use the shower and prefer the circular tub as they are not as narrow, have rain shower heads, and have a seat.

  • Bump-out verandas - On the Wish, Treasure, and upcoming Destiny ships, these are rooms that have verandahs on the bump-out, so they have larger curved verandahs.  (Note they do have a bit of an obstructed view on the sides, but you can get a pretty good extension on your balcony - and these vary by stateroom.)  Check out the resources below for more information on staterooms with bump-out (or extended) verandas.

  • Obstructed verandas - These are verandas that have a partially obstructed view.  These are typically offered at a discount; however, the amount of obstruction varies.  In some cases, the obstruction is very small...making them a pretty good deal.  Check out the resources below for more information on staterooms with obstructed verandas.

  • Navigator verandas - These are enclosed verandas.  These are typically offered at a discount; however, the configuration varies.  Check out the resources below for more information on staterooms with navigator verandas.

We recommend checking out the following resources for additional stateroom information:

Travel Planning

If you are traveling by air to the port, we highly recommend arriving at least a day before your sailing. Travel delays are common these days and you don't want to miss your cruise due to a delayed flight.    Disney does provide an array of travel planning services including Air, Hotel, Ground Transfers, and Travel Insurance.

  • Air - Disney does provide assistance in booking airfare.  This can be great if you are looking to hit the easy button or want one number to call if there is an issue.  However, many customers (particularly seasoned travelers) prefer to book their airfare using miles and/or directly with a preferred carrier for more direct control over their airline reservations (selecting seats, food preferences, etc.).

  • Hotel - Disney also has good rates at hotels close to the airport and/or departure ports and offers ground transfers (for a fee) from hotels booked through DCL.  Again, this can be great if you are looking to hit the easy button or want one number to call if there is an issue.  Many travelers prefer to book their hotel using points and/or leveraging their loyalty/rewards programs.

  • Ground transfers - The transfers are a convenient option to give from the airport (or a local Disney hotel) to the port.  This is very convenient for ports that are a good distance from the airport (i.e. - Rome).  It is priced per person, so it can get expensive for larger groups/families.  More budget-conscious travelers may want to look at 3rd party options.

  • Travel Insurance - We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment.  DCL offers 3rd party travel insurance that is competitively priced.  [We personally purchase the DCL-offered travel insurance for all of our sailings.  We haven't had a cause to use it yet...and hope to keep it that way :)]. There are many travel insurance providers, so more budget-conscious travelers may want to look at 3rd party options.  Additionally, if you are looking to extend your vacation with a pre or post-stay, you may want to price 3rd party providers that will cover the whole trip, not just the cruise portion.    â€‹

Selecting a Dining Rotation

Dining on Disney Cruise Line is rotational.  This means that you will assigned a rotation to visit one of the three main dining restaurants each night while on board (but your server will follow you in the rotation so they will be the same every evening and learn your dietary needs and preferences...which is great!).  There are two dinner seating options for rotational dining:

  • Main dining (early seating around 6 PM)

  • Second dining (later around 8 PM)

The main dining is the more popular option.  With main dining, you eat dinner at your assigned restaurant first then see the show.  With second dining, you will attend the show first and then go to your assigned restaurant.  Main dining is our preference for U.S.-based sailings, for overseas sailings some of the excursions run into the early evening, so you may want to take that into account when booking your dining time.  We recommend reserving main (if available) and changing to the second seating (if needed) once you finalize your itinerary.  Also, if you want private dining (not sharing a table at dinner), be sure to review the section below about downloading the Navigator app and “reviewing your cruise options”.  (see below).

After Booking

Once you have booked your cruise, there are a few key steps (and dates) that you will want to note in order to take advantage of all that Disney Cruise Line has to offer:

1.  Download the Disney Navigator App

2.  Review your Cruise Options

3.  Key Dates to Book Activities and Reservations

If you book with us, we can help you with any questions or recommendations as you start to prepare for your adventure!  We will also send you reminders ahead of key dates to make sure you don't miss any exciting opportunities!

1 | Download the Disney Navigator App

As soon as you finish booking, download or access the Navigator application (and add your reservation number if it is not already associated with your account).

You will need the Navigator app once you are on board to find the schedule, so it is a good idea to make sure that it works (they often release required updates) and get familiar with the app before you go. There are also some important cruise options that you will want to confirm ahead of time (see below)

2 | Review your Cruise Options in the Navigator App

When you access your reservation in the Navigator app, you will have a section to “review your cruise options”.  This allows you to review/update your current selections for the following:

  • Ground transportation

  • Air transportation

  • Insurance options

  • Dining time - (Note:  you can request to be waitlisted if you were not able to secure your preferred time)

  • Special Requests -  You will want to fill out the special requests to highlight any dietary requirements, special assistance, celebrations, and most importantly your table preference.  The table preference is also very important (and often overlooked)!  The Special Request allows you to set a preference to sit near a window, entertainment, etc. but the most important is if you want private dining (only your sailing party seated at your table).  During the dining rotations, Disney may seat you with another party or group for the duration of your sailing.  This is most common for smaller parties of 4 or less.  They do try to pair up groups that have kids of similar age…so if you are looking to meet new people, this may be a great option for you.  If you are looking for private dining (and are not booked on concierge), then you should complete the special requests section and select “at a private table”.  This is not a guarantee, but it lets them know that you prefer a private table for your sailing party.  (Once you are on board, there is usually an area that is set up for dining inquiries where you can confirm you are seated at a private table, and if not, make the request directly with the dining team.)

3 | *Key Dates to Book Activities and Reservations*

The navigator app will help remind you of these important dates (but it’s usually the morning after the window opens).  If you want the best chance of getting the best excursions, Palo reservation, or earliest check-in time, then I would recommend setting your own timer to log in at 12 PM ET on the day your booking window opens.  (But, if you don’t get what you want the first time, keep checking back.  People make changes or cancel and slots free up.  (You can also ask to be waitlisted for some activities onboard at the guest services, dining concierge, or port adventures desk)

  • Paid Services include Shore excursions, Onboard activities (wine/cocktail tasting events, sports simulators), Spa services, Royal Tea/Olaf Picnic Experience, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique/Pirates League Appointments, Palo/Remy reservations, etc.)

  • Themed Onboard gifts:  For themed sailings, there are typically room decor packages that are available on a limited basis...so order early.  These can be ordered from the Navigator app or at:  https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/gifts-and-amenities/link-reservation

  • Royal Gathering:  This is a reservation-only (but totally free) onboard experience during select at-sea days.  This gives you an opportunity to meet and greet (and take photos) with multiple princesses at one time.  This books up fast, so we recommend reserving this onboard activity as soon as the window opens.

  • DisneyBand+:  The DisneyBand+ is a wristband that can be used on most sailings for a more hands-free experience onboard.  For more information and ordering, check out:  https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/why-cruise-disney/disney-band-plus/

  • Onboard gifts: Onboard gifts include water, drink packages, flowers, and gifts that may be ordered in advance and delivered to the room or dining room.  These can be ordered at any time up to 3 days before departure from the Navigator app or at:  https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/gifts-and-amenities/link-reservation

1 | Plan Ahead for your Arrival

Don’t arrive too much earlier than your scheduled arrival time. You will not be allowed to enter the port terminal before your assigned boarding time.  If you arrive before your boarding time (that was assigned/selected during the online check-in) you will be waiting in a line (most likely outside the terminal building).  We try to arrive a few minutes after our boarding time to avoid waiting outside the terminal building.  But don’t worry, there are still several more lines that you get to stand in: the security line, the check-in line, and then the boarding line.

2 | Check-In

Be sure to have your port arrival form, government-issued documents (passports/IDs) and DisneyBand+ available for check- in.  If you want to see if a room upgrade is available, there is a desk after check in that you can inquire about availability and pricing for room upgrades.

3 | All Aboard!  (Boarding)

Once you check-in, you may have a short wait for your group to be called for boarding.  They will offer to take a photo before you board.   (You can always ask the photographers to take a photo with your device as well if you don’t plan to purchase any photos or packages…they are happy to do it!). Then get out your cameras when you get to the ship, as they will announce your family and characters will be waiting to greet you as you walk on board…this makes a great video!

4 | Grab some lunch

Once you are on board, you will have two options for lunch: buffet dining (at pool level) or sit-down dining at one of the themed restaurants.  The buffet lunch is great if you want to take advantage of the less crowded pool/waterslides on boarding day, but can be a little crowded.  If you are looking for a more laid-back experience, grab lunch at the restaurant.  This is also a great opportunity to correct the Navigator app (below) and start looking for those "can't miss" events and activities.

5 | Connect your Navigator App

Connect your Navigator app by selecting the "I Am Onboard" option.  You can review your itinerary and begin looking at previously booked activities, dining rotations, and onboard events/activities that are available throughout the cruise.  You can “heart” the items that you don’t want to miss so that the app will remind you 15 minutes before the start time.

6 | Kids Club Check-In

If you have kids that would like to go to Oceaneers or Edge, go to the kids clubs to get your child set up.  For Oceaneers, you will need to register your child in person (even if you filled out the form online) to confirm that information and check out procedures.  For Edge, the kids will get assigned to a team and meet the counselors.  Before dinner, the kids clubs are “open house” so anyone (including adults) are invited to explore these spaces.  This is a good time to explore the club with your kids to make them more comfortable.

7 | Get your Spa Package

If you plan to purchase a Rainforest Room pass or set up additional spa services, head to the spa to make those reservations.  The rainforest room passes (daily access to the steam rooms, showers, heated loungers, etc.) are limited, so we suggest getting signed up as soon as you are on board.

8 | Reserve or Waitlist Shore Excursions

If you want to book, check availability, and/or be waitlisted for an excursion, head to the port adventures desk.

9 | Confirm or Request Private Dining

If you want to make sure that you are assigned a private table or want to change your dining rotation, ask a cast member for the location of the dining assistance table (it is typically outside one of the restaurants).

10 | Find your Stateroom

Now that you have eaten lunch and wandered around the ship, your cabin may be ready (usually between 1:30 and 3 PM).  Take the opportunity to locate your cabin and grab your room keys (they are in an envelope tucked next to your door).  Don't worry if your luggage has not arrived...luggage delivery can extend past dinner time.

11 | Attend the Muster Drill

This is a safety requirement - absolutely no exceptions.  If you do not arrive on time, you will have to do the “walk of shame” as they call out the cabins and names of individuals who are missing from the drill.  If you need additional time to travel to a location (small children, mobility challenges, etc.), then plan to arrive a few minutes early and hang out for a few minutes afterward.  The halls will get crowded immediately before and after the drill, but it will clear up quickly.

Before you Disembark

Here are a few final tips to help ensure a smooth disembarking process:

1.  Purchase your Future Cruise Credit

2. Purchase your photos

3.  Download your folio

4. Fill out your survey

5. Plan for disembarking

We hope you made some magical memories and are already thinking of your next DCL cruise!   If you purchase your Future Cruise Credit, be sure to send us a note within 30 days of your sailing so we can help you keep track of your placeholder and help plan your next adventure!

1 | Purchase your Future Cruise Credit!

Don't forget to purchase your Future Cruise Credit!  This is only available while onboard through the Navigator app.  If you put down a $250 placeholder deposit for a future sailing,  you will get 10% off the retail rate.  (You don't need to reserve a specific date or sailing.  You only need to sail with DCL within two years to use it.).  That's a great savings opportunity!

2 |  Purchase your Photos

Be sure to purchase any photos taken by the photography team before you disembark.  If you purchased a package with digital photos, then you will have 180 days after sailing to download them.

3 | Download your folio

If you need a detailed copy of your receipt, be sure to check the Navigator app to download a copy.  (Paper copies are no longer provided.)

4 | Fill our your survey

Fill out your guest survey.  This is the best way to recognize a cast or crew member, as well as highlight areas for improvement.

5 | Plan for disembarking

Plan for how you will disembark.  If you chose a walk-off disembark, then you will keep all of your luggage with you in your room the night before and will be allowed to disembark as soon as the ship is cleared at the port.  (Note there is no luggage assistance with this option.). With a standard disembark, you will be given tags with characters to tag your bags to leave outside your door the night prior to disembarking.  The DCL team will collect your bags and you can pick them up shore side.  With this option, you will wait until your luggage tag is called before you disembark.  If you chose this option, be sure to keep one bag in your room (to carry anything you need for that final night and disembarkation day), make note of your character (I always keep one of the extra bag tags in case we forget...it's happened).

1 | Have Fun!
  • Now for the best part, have fun!  Try not to sweat the small stuff and focus on making some magical (and likely imperfect) memories!  The kids will likely go a bit crazy, someone will forget to pack something, etc. ...but as long as no one gets hurt...it's going to be okay.   Reach out to the cruise team for help if you need it and try not to sweat the small stuff.  (Check out our blog for some of our tips on traveling with tweens.)

2 | Additional Onboard Services
  • Shopping - There are plenty of options to shop on board.  (And if your luggage got lost/delayed, no worries...they have just about everything you need.). If you are on a themed cruise or overseas, there may be some limited stock items, so expect a line on the first night.  The stores will not open until they are in international waters, which is typically around 6-7 PM on the first day.  If you aren't looking for any special or limited items, then try shopping later in the cruise.

  • Currency conversions - On the ship, you won't need any cash; however, you may need some money at the port for tips or small purchases.  Guest services typically keep some local currency on board and will exchange dollars for currency at the current rate (no service fee) and convert back any unused bills at the same rate.  This is a great and often underused service that they offer!

  • Laundry - Disney Cruise Line has several laundry facilities on board if you need to do some laundry while at sea.  They also sell detergent, but it is at premium prices - so consider bringing laundry detergent sheets if you think you will need to do some laundry.  On sailings longer than 7 nights, they will typically have a laundry night halfway through the sailing.  You can fill a laundry bag (up to 30 items) to be laundered and returned folded the next day for around $25-35.  We use this on all of the longer European itineraries, and it has been wonderful!

  • Photography - If you purchased the photography package, then never say no to a photo.  I believe that the more you take, the more you increase the odds of getting a few good ones.  The photographers are great, but if you aren't a fan of having your picture taken all the time (like at dinner), tell them no thanks and they will be on their way.  If you do like having photos taken, but don't like to pay the premium for the onboard service.  Ask the photographers to take photos with your phone or camera, they are happy to do it...free of charge :)

  • Internet Services - Internet services are expensive.  it is decent for ship internet service, but expect it to be a bit slow at peak times.  If you are trying to get some work done onboard, then port days, early morning or late evening are your best bets.  (To save money and encourage your family to reduce screen time onboard, check out our blog post on traveling with Tweens.)
